Patio Umbrellas

Cushion Sources created this section of our web site to help consumers understand a bit more about the different umbrella types and styles that their cushion and umbrella source is offering. If you are in the market to buy patio umbrellas to match your cushion set,we hope the following will help explain to you more about what you will be getting.

Umbrella Terminology

Umbrella Types

  • Market Umbrellas
A "market umbrella" is an umbrella that is usually made of wood and has straight ribs that stretch the fabric in an octagon shape. It is called a market umbrella because this type of umbrella became popular due to it's widespread use throughout the many flea markets of Italy. Because of it's popularity and high demand, many furniture manufacturers began creating market umbrellas with anodized aluminum frames to allow for crank handle lifting and push-button tilt mechanisms. Make sure the umbrella source you are using specifies what type of frame is used on the market umbrella they are offering you.

  • Traditional Umbrellas
A traditional patio umbrella is usually made of anodized aluminum and has bowed ribs that stretch the fabric in a hemispherical shape. The ribs usually differ in numbers based on the diameter of the umbrella. It is called a traditional umbrella because this type of umbrella looks like the standard shade or rain umbrellas that people hold in their hands. Traditional patio umbrellas usually come with crank handle lifting menchanisms and push-button tilts. Speak to your umbrella source about which type of traditional umbrellas they carry and how many ribs the traditional umbrella is made with.
